My Rock of Ages

You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in You, all whose thoughts are fixed on You! Trust in the LORD always, for the LORD GOD is the eternal Rock. Isaiah 26:3-4

What distinguishes a wise man’s house from a foolish man’s house? Is it the type of material he uses, whether it is built using straw, sticks or bricks? Is it that he has found the most storm-free location to build his house? Or that it is installed with the most state-of-the-art home security systems, and fully insured in the event of any damage?

The reality is that storms will occur in life, regardless of how we try to pre-empt or prevent them. The true quality of a house is tested when its foundation is shaken, when the rain comes pouring down and the floods arise. No matter how much effort we put into our plans, resources and abilities, these will not save us. Jesus says that we will able to weather the storms of life when we are founded on the Rock (Matthew 7:24-27), which means listening to His Word and living it out.

When was the last time that I have dug deep into His Word? Do I go beyond a cursory glance at the verse-of-the-day, or do I spend time to fix my mind and meditate on what He is telling me? Is Jesus truly my refuge and fortress, my God in whom I trust (Psalm 91:2)? When the storm comes, do I turn to Him or do I struggle to stay afloat on my own?

Peace is not the absence of a storm, but rest in the midst of a storm. Jesus keeps us in perfect peace when we trust in Him, our Rock of Ages.

Peace is not the absence of a storm, but rest in the midst of a storm.
