A HeartDriven Life?

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? “I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to what their deeds deserve.” – Jeremiah 17:9-10

How do you live your life? Popular culture says “follow your heart”. But Jeremiah 17:9 says that the heart is deceitful above all things, so wouldn’t a heart driven life be a dangerous thing?

But there is a context that precedes the above passage. Jeremiah 17:5-8 says “cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the Lord…but blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.”

When we let our own flesh govern our desires, we end up seeking after temporal pleasures that pass away. These lead to death rather than life. Even King David, the one man in the Bible whom God called “a man after His own heart” was not infallible. In a moment of weakness when he let his flesh take control, he lied, coveted another man’s wife, committed murder and adultery.

We all fail at some point in our lives, but what matters more is how we respond in the face of failure. King David recognised that he had sinned and came before God with a repentant heart, asking God to create a clean heart and renew a right spirit within him. He knew that God would not despise a genuinely broken and contrite heart (Psalm 51:10, 17).

The heart of the matter… is the matter of the heart. Ultimately, what determines the condition of a man’s heart, is whether he trusts in his own flesh, or trusts in God. If he trusts in God, he need not fear the heat when trials come.

To be HeartDriven is to have our hearts’ desires come into alignment with what is on God’s heart. We hope that our music will be a catalyst for self-reflection and collective revival, to ignite a movement of worship and prayer whereby generations of sons and daughters will trust God with fully yielded hearts.

In the face of trial, may we be found faithful. In the face of failure, may we be found humble. In times of crisis, may our hearts reveal who Christ is. May our hearts delight in the LORD, such that the desires of our hearts bring about His purposes in our world. May our hearts be moved to love others the way God loves us.

What determines the condition of a man’s heart, is whether he trusts in his own flesh, or trusts in God.
